Rogue Samurai is an action roguelike in the "survivor" genre, similar to Vampire Hunters, but ninja themed. I really dig the visual style, the animations, the music is really good, and the abilities you can unlock are pretty cool. You're able to summon dragons!
Developer and publisher of Rogue Samurai, CO's Entertainment, has announced that they will no longer be updating the game. Based on what was posted, it seems they had to make a decision between spending money continuing to try and improve and update this game, or use that money on new and different projects. They decided on other projects. I can understand that. They also say they're very grateful for the fans and feedback. They learned a lot on their very first game production and release. I'm not happy about this or anything but I've certainly already gotten my money's worth and I have enjoyed the game.
One of my favorite things about Rogue Samurai are the camera angles. I haven't seen these camera angles in a game like this. There are the newer third-person games in this genre but this one is still top-down and allows for different and interesting angles. It also has a very far away zoom-out and a super close zoom-in which is pretty nice. It's also cool that you can view these changes instantly while in the Options menu as the game is still visible in the background of the menu.
I have seen complaints on the forums and some reviews about performance. I've played the game just fine on my computer but I can feel that there probably could be some more optimization done for it. The longer the level goes on, the screen starts to get really filled up with lots of enemies and AoE abilities. It's impressive to see. I really like it. That's when the performance seems to take a hit but it's hard for me to tell exactly what cuz it still runs just fine for me.
I have really enjoyed this top-down survivor genre of games for awhile. Some of my favorites in the genre are Champion Shift, Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel, Survivors of the Dawn, Yet Another Zombie Survivors, Karate Survivor, Sodaman, and this one, Rogue Samurai, of course. Some others that I keep an eye on are Dwarven Realms, it's neat but too easy and loaded with microtransactions, and Drive Loop: Survivor, that game needs a lot of work, I love the concept, though. Past that, there's at least thirty more I've played and possibly forgotten off the top of my head for now.
Rogue Samurai released in November of 2024 for PC. It's price is $4.99 so that was an easy buy for me. There is also a demo which is what had convinced me to buy it a little while back. Check out the game Credits list below the trailer. I just felt like sharing that. I had to do a little bit of cropping but that's all of them. I was browsing some of the reviews on Steam and man the people that wrote negative reviews are just flat out morons. Always read the context of negative reviews and you'll see just how stupid people can be. Thanks for reading. Game on.
